HIRING STAFF FOR YOUR STARUP
You may have heard the expression that “Business is a team sport.” Most business owners have found that to be true. So if it is time for you to hire staff, then check out these tips for attracting and hiring the best talent to your company.
Here are 6 Tips for Hiring Staff for your own business:
1) Focus on the candidate core competencies and check their social profiles
Checking the social profiles of potential employees is a great method of hiring the best staff. It allows you to get an insight into their life and you can also see the career progression and top skills and experiences. By reviewing a candidate’s social profiles, you will quickly be able to understand who they really are and how they present themselves publicly. Also, look at their LinkedIn profile to check their top skills and read the endorsements so you can see what their core competencies are.
2) Always fit the person to the job
One thing to note about the hiring process is that you just have to fit the person and their unique talents and personality to the job. For example, I once interviewed a candidate for a Director of Product Management role and our company decided to hire him as a Director of Operations instead. By hiring someone with strong industry and product knowledge as the head of operations, we were able to create a more market-focused operation and grow the company faster.
3) Look for talent in new places
There are many situations where the best talent can be found in the most unlikely places. Try to keep an eye open for potential candidates because who knows, you are most likely to find the best person for the job somewhere you would never expect such as online forums, industry events, alumni parties, etc.
4) Mitigate personal bias/ Get multiple opinions
Making sure that multiple people meet the candidates will remove any personal bias, this is a very important thing to keep in mind and it will offer you incredible results as well as a very good value. You always need to think about the company first and mitigating the personal bias is one of the first things you can do in this regard.
5) Never judge a book by its cover
Spend some time with the candidate and see if you like them more or less then you did on first sight. Also, ask each candidate to do a short assignment and see if you like the quality of his or her work. If not, keep looking and find more candidates.
6) Do they believe in your company and values
Every new hire in a small business can impact the company’s culture. Be sure to spend time during the interview asking each candidate about their values and whether they believe in your company’s products.
Finally, remember that not all hires will work out.
Even if you focus on hiring the best staff, there are times when you can make a bad hire. Just like everything in life, it’s important to learn from mistakes the best way you can. It will be hard and challenging for sure, but you have to do it if you want incredible results!
As you can see, hiring the best staff takes time, effort and attention. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t rush the hiring process. Finding the right team member is critical to growing your business and preserving your company’s culture, brand and values.
